The World Series of Poker Stars
The World Series of Poker (WSOP) has made it possible for the world to know and recognize poker as it is today. It has also introduced a lot of gifted and legendary poker players.
When talking about great poker players, it is impossible to miss the top three famous players who have participated in the World Series and garnered the most number of WSOP bracelets. Phillip J. Hellmuth tops the list with 11 bracelets, closely followed by Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan with 10 bracelets each.
The Poker Brat
A dropout from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Phillip J. Hellmuth Jr., won his first World Series of Poker bracelet in the main event at the age of 24 in 1989. He was the youngest to attain this honor at that time. He garnered the most number of WSOP bracelets after winning the 2007 WSOP, giving him a total of 11 WSOP bracelets.
The poker brat, as Hellmuth is commonly called, rank 7th in WSOP All Time Money List with a total of $5,650,786.00 in total winnings. Hellmuth is also active in other prestigious poker tournaments such as the World Poker Tour (WPT). He also wrote some articles at the CardPlayer Magazine and published some books.
Hellmuth gained his nickname “The Poker Brat” from his abrasive attitude at the poker table, most of which are speculated as part of his marketing act. But most professional and amateur players respected Hellmuth for his talent at the Poker table.
Texas Dolly
The boy, Doyle Brunson was born on August 10, 1933 in Longview, Texas. He was first seen as a great athlete rather than a legendary poker player for Brunson was a gifted basketball player as well as a more-than-average runner. But a knee injury halted Doyle’s athletic days.
He also had a promising education that would have given him a great career other than becoming a professional poker player as he has a Masters Degree in Administrative Education. But on the day of his first job, he realized that playing poker for three hours makes him more secure than his one-month pay does.
Unlike Hellmuth who focuses on Texas Hold’Em, Doyle Brunson is good in a lot of poker games aside from Hold’Em. He actually started playing Five Card draw and has won WSOP bracelets at Seven Card Stud, Razz and HORSE.
Brunson was the first to garner a million dollars in winning poker tournaments. He also won the WSOP main event in two consecutive years in 1976 and 1977. He also published a lot of poker books, the most popular of which are Super System and Super System II.
Johnny Chan
Johnny Chan is easily recognizable at the poker table with his Asian looks and his lucky orange lying around. The “lucky orange,” as Chan explains, does nothing than ward off the unpleasant smell of cigarette on the table.
Chan was born in Canton, China and moved to Phoenix, Arizona before settling in Houston, Texas. Johnny Chan is one of the few players who won the WSOP Main Event in two consecutive years in 1987 and 1988. He is also the proud owner of 10 WSOP bracelets.
Aside from being a poker pro with a total of $3,744,331.00 in total winnings at the WSOP, Chan also owns a fast-food franchise business. He actually took Hotel and Restaurant Management at the Houston University before he dropped out at the age of 21.
